Newly opened restaurant Mr & Mrs Fox, Quarry Bay - eclectic mix

Three-storey steakhouse opened by Swire has quickly become a dining hotspot

Mr & Mrs Fox has  quickly become the dining hotspot in Quarry Bay. Opened by Swire, the three-storey steakhouse has a rustic, country-style décor with lots of wood. With floor-to-ceiling windows facing  Tong Chong Street, it is perfect for people watching.

The bar on the first floor is  dedicated to Mrs Fox, and Mr Fox gets the second floor – a dining area with booths and tables along the windows. The top floor, cleverly designed to appear “hidden” behind a bookshelf, is dubbed The Den and is for private parties.

Lobster curry at Mr & Mrs Fox.

The restaurant describes its menu as “international with Asian flavours”, and during the soft-opening period the offerings are extremely limited, although diners get 50 per cent off their bill until the end of  August. We visited within a week of its opening,  when the restaurant  had yet to receive its liquor licence.

For starters, the shellfish platter is a good choice at HK$235 for the small version (HK$585 medium, HK$975 large). It had three freshly shucked oysters (Pacific,  fine de claire and Normandy), small prawns, one king crab leg and four mussels. The seafood came with a lovely vinaigrette, but the cocktail sauce was on the sweet side.

Wild-rice-crusted Maine lobster (HK$265) was served with green and red curry on either side of the plate, and garnished with sliced lychees. The crispy rice may have been added for texture, but  it didn’t add to the overall taste,  which lacked a flavour to call its own. The foamy curry sauces didn’t add much, either. However, we were pleasantly surprised by  the abundance of vegetables hidden beneath the lobster. A side dish of Brussels sprouts (HK$35) with chestnuts, apples and lardons was delicious, but some of the chestnuts were undercooked and inedibly hard.  Another side dish of barbecue-spiced hand-cut fries (HK$35) was well seasoned, but the fries were on the thin side.

Chocolate souffle.

The chocolate soufflé with passion fruit sauce (HK$80), decorated with the restaurant logo dusted on top with icing sugar, was undercooked, which made it more like a molten chocolate cake - though its tangy sauce helped cut through the chocolate’s richness and sweetness.
