CLOSED - Restaurant review: Teakha II in Sai Wan - baked delights and fantastic tea

New outlet near HKU MTR station is roomier than the original but just as good. The menu is similar to that in the sister establishment, featuring a good selection of teas, savoury items and cakes

If you’re like us and constantly craving Teakha’s masala chai and baked goodies, you’ll be happy to know that Nana Chan, who founded the Sheung Wan tea shop, has opened a branch in Sai Ying Pun.

Masala chai and scones

Less than five minutes' walk from the Hong Kong University station, Teakha II is roomier than the original, but has the same charm. The cosy interior is dotted with wooden communal tables and livened up with vases of yellow dancing lady orchids.

Interior of Teakha II

A giant blackboard by a self-service water machine lists the offerings from the open kitchen. The menu is similar to that in the sister establishment, featuring a good selection of teas and savoury items such as the pineapple bun sandwich (HK$68) and croque madame (HK$52). Cakes and other baked treats are displayed on the counter next to the cashier.

The quiche (HK$62), served with a mixed salad with vinaigrette, has a nice, flaky crust. The tomato and mushroom  filling is well seasoned, although my friend would like the custard to have a firmer texture.

Spiced apple, lemon and ricotta pancakes

The house-made pancakes (HK$65), topped with bacon and caramelised banana, are tasty and substantial. For those who are not fans of the sweet and savoury combination, pair the fluffy pancakes with lemon, ricotta and spiced apple instead.

Keemun rose tea

The Keemun rose tea (HK$58), topped with honey and a rich foam, and jasmine blossom tea (HK$60), which comes in a clear tea pot, are great accompaniments to the lemon tea pound cake (HK$32).

Lemon tea pound cake

Served with a dollop of lemon custard, the cake lacks a strong aroma of tea, but its tartness makes a nice ending to our lazy Saturday brunch.

Across from the kitchen, insulated tea cups, hand-painted ceramics from Jingdezhen, Taiwanese tea-infused soaps, and fresh tea leaves are displayed for sale. The tea also continues the tradition of hosting music performances and artistic workshops for the public.
