The top 10 Hong Kong restaurants on TripAdvisor include some unexpected gems, so do you agree with the crowd's favourites?

Users of top travel website favour some classic places and like to have a view

Spanish chef Martin Berasategui’s Lascarte in northern Spain has topped the 2015 list of the world’s best restaurants based on reviews on travel website TripAdvisor.  Among the site’s millions of globetrotting reviewers, the second spot in this year’s annual rankings was awarded to Europea in Montreal, followed by Maison Lameloise in Chagny, France. None of the top three in the respected World’s 50 Best Restaurants list made TripAdvisor's top three.

Travellers’ top 25 Hong Kong restaurants were also an eclectic mix, including a new private kitchen that has already garnered more than 100 reviews, at No.6, and a casual Brazilian steakhouse in Lan Kwai Fong at number 10.

1. Town

Several of chef Bryan Nagao’s restaurants, including Kokage, Chez Moi and D Diamond, have come and gone, but Town is apparently a venue people want to stay in business. The latest venture of Nagao, former executive chef of The Peninsula’s Felix, Town serves a mix of Italian, Japanese and French cuisines at Cubus, the hottest gastronomy building in Causeway Bay. Senior food editor Susan Jung enjoyed her recent meal here.

2. Cafe Gray Deluxe

Housed on the top floor of  The Upper House in Admiralty, Cafe Gray Deluxe is one of our favourite bar-restaurants with a view. It overlooks Victoria Harbour and, thanks to Andre Fu’s use of marble, champagne gold and beige, the ambience breathes warmth and elegance. Chef Gray Kunz is known for his modern European dishes with an Asian twist, all to be accompanied with some wicked cocktails concocted behind the 14-metre-long bar.

3. Le Dome de Cristal

The French restaurant has received mixed reviews since it opened in 2013, but there is no denying that a craving for glasses of bubbly can always be sated here. A joint venture between Ambrosia Cuisines Group and Cristal by Louis Roederer, the decadent venue designed by Steve Leung encapsulates a sense of luxury. Diners can celebrate different occasions with chef Charles-Benoit Lacour’s creations, although many find its weekend free-flow brunch more affordable.

4. Mandarin Grill + Bar

With executive chef Uwe Opocensky at the helm, it is almost guaranteed that meals at the Mandarin Grill + Bar will be an indulgence, so we were a bit surprised that it wasn’t higher up on the list. With a view of Statue Square and Chater Garden, the venue – designed by Terence Conran – serves grill classics with refreshing presentation. The special menu Opocensky creates annually for Art Basel, for instance, is testimony to his creativity.

5. Amber

The ranking of this contemporary French fine-dining restaurant is consistent with its two-Michelin-star rating. Culinary director Richard Ekkebus is the consummate gourmet magician, conjuring up a constant stream of to-die-for dishes that are not only visually stunning but also a divine experience to taste. The menus reflect the seasons, with ingredients sourced from around the world.

6. Twenty Six by Liberty

Chef Bjoern Alexander has taken the helm of this newly opened private kitchen, which requires diners to have  an adventurous spirit for trying new and familiar ingredients presented in innovative ways. The German chef is there to guide you through your journey, which may include trying seaweed that’s not at all like nori. It’s clear to see the chef likes playing with his dinner. 7. Serge et le Phoque

Just two years old and this quirky French restaurant, located next to the Wan Chai food market, has gained kudos for its use of fresh seasonal ingredients and seafood. The original concept was a multi-course set dinner, but it has recently begun offering an à la carte menu. The chocolate tart with umeboshi salt is a sinfully sweet finish to the proceedings. 8. Tin Lung Heen

What’s not to like about dining above the clouds in Hong Kong’s tallest building? The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong’s fine-dining Chinese restaurant towers above the rest with its fabulous dim sum that’s a gourmet treat. Try the deep-fried glutinous rice dumping with foie gras, or how about steamed crab roe dumpling with mentaiko? Not to be missed is the barbecued Iberian pork with honey. For seafood, look no further than the steamed crab claw with egg white in huadiao wine.

9. Angelini

This Italian restaurant has fantastic views of Hong Kong Island and is a romantic rendezvous point. New chef  Alessandro Angelini  makes his dishes fresh and light to suit Hong Kong’s warm climate, so his creamy sauces in particular aren’t too heavy and rich. Angelini also respects traditional Italian cuisine by using top ingredients and letting the natural flavours shine through on the plate.

10. Braza Churrascaria Brazilian Steakhouse

Hong Kong is crazy about its meat, in particular steaks, and Braza Churrascaria gives carnivores a lot to munch on. Aside from the large table in the centre of the restaurant that is chock full of appetisers, some of which aren’t exactly Brazilian, staff wander around carrying hunks of meat that they carve for diners tableside. Don’t be shy to ask for more, either. We particularly liked the beef and lamb. Here's how Susan Jung reviewed the restaurant.
