Restaurant review: Don Don Tei, Hung Hom - tasty tempura, tempting price
The batter is light and delicate, and everything we tasted was good, at Osaka-based chain’s first Hong Kong outlet, in Whampoa Garden
Don Don Tei is an affordable new Japanese restaurant in Hung Hom sure to appeal to those who love tempura. The Osaka-based chain has 14 branches in Japan and three others overseas in the United States and Malaysia.
Don Don Tei offers around 20 varieties of tempura, which has a light, delicate and crisp batter; it’s fried in vegetable oil imported from Japan. You can choose between ingredients such as fish, Hiroshima oysters, king prawns, chicken and vegetables.
In addition to tempura, they also offer sashimi and sushi, and five set meals. Assorted tempura with vegetable udon set (HK$98) came with vegetable salad, soup and pickles. Seaweed salad (HK$18) and crab meat and roe salad (HK$18) were nice side dishes. The sashimi (salmon, tuna, sweet shrimp, yellowtail, scallop and toro) was well priced: HK$38 to HK$48 for three pieces.
