Brooklyn Bar & Grill brings the New York vibe to Hong Kong
Casual Staunton Street gastropub specialises in traditional US comfort food such as fried chicken and cheesecake served in American-sized portions
Happy hour at Brooklyn Bar & Grill is 4pm to 7pm, which explains why the place was heaving when we arrived at 6.30pm. Patrons of a certain vintage will appreciate the soundtrack of Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel and Queen on rotation at this New York-style gastropub.
The place is tiny, but after the happy hour crowd slowly drifted elsewhere, we were able to sample some dishes without bumping into other customers. While the place is popular mostly for its beers and wines, the food here is pretty good, although served in large portions.
The truffled pepperoni pizza with oregano (HK$138) was so large, we almost didn’t have enough room for it on the table. We didn’t detect much of a truffle flavour from the truffle oil, but there was such a generous amount of cheese that it threatened to ooze off with every bite.
The menu lists two choices for dessert: New York cheesecake and chef Ayin’s seasonal dessert (HK$78). When we inquired about the latter, we were told it was cheesecake. So much for choice.
The texture of the cheesecake was smooth, but tasted bland without the chocolate sauce. It was also missing the Graham cracker crust which would have given the dessert more texture.
