Favourite Hong Kong restaurants of Roger Staeheli, Nespresso’s man in the city

Dim sum and Sichuan dishes may be his flavour of the moment, but Staeheli says he’ll try anything, from seafood at The Ocean to a burger at Beef & Liberty or Italian with a view at Tosca

I’ve always been adventurous about trying different foods and I like to learn the cultural story behind each dish. I’ve lived in Hong Kong for four years, and in a city with such a diverse mix of culture and passion for food, you naturally have an appreciation for different cuisines. Currently, I am loving dim sum and Sichuan food.

Some of my favourites are from the Le Comptoir Group. Their restaurants have great interior design.

For example, Bibo (163 Hollywood Road, Central, tel: 2956 3188) is like a train; The Ocean (shop 303-304, 3/F The Pulse, 28 Beach Road, Repulse Bay, tel: 2889 5939) is like an aquarium, and their dishes are like art pieces. Bibo has fantastic food and a great wine selection, and the Ruinart champagne free-flow brunch is a nice choice. I enjoy the seafood cuisine at The Ocean.

The Chinese and French fusion dishes at VEA (29/F and 30/F, The Wellington, 198 Wellington Street, Central, tel: 2711 8639) arecreative and innovative.

Tosca (Level 102, The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong, ICC, 1 Austin Road West, Kowloon, tel: 2263 2270)is one of my favourite Italian restaurants. Can’t beat the food or the view.

For visitors, it’s China Tang (shop 411-413, 4/F Landmark Atrium, 5 Queen’s Road Central, tel: 2522 2148). You start with happy hour drinks at the bar overlooking Victoria Harbour and enjoy a breathtaking view of the sunset over the sea. Then you move to the table and have their must-try Peking duck. A fine spot for traditional Chinese food with an ambience.

If I’m not having a salad at my desk for lunch, I like to go to Beef & Liberty (several locations, including 3/F California Tower, 30-32 D’Aguilar Street, Lan Kwai Fong, tel: 2450 5778) for their burgers, especially their limited edition slow-cooked duck confit burger.

A wild mushroom, cheese and egg pizza from Mercato in Lan Kwai Fong.
Mercato (8/F California Tower, tel: 3706 8567) is another place for a good-value meal. Their wood-fired pizza is a must-try, and great for a casual weekend lunch with wine pairing.
Room to breathe at Seasons by Olivier E.
Seasons By Olivier E (Shop 308, 3/F Lee Gardens Two, 28 Yun Ping Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2505 6228) has great, innovative dishes that go very well with their sommelier’s wine recommendations. The restaurant has a dim, romantic ambience and the tables are not too close so you get some privacy. They also have attentive service.

Lastly, I go cycling in Shek O on Saturday mornings and I like to stop by a place called Lulu’s Cafe (742 Shek O Village, tel: 2809 4423) for breakfast and coffee – black. The place has a good energy and you see a mix of locals and expats there, enjoying the modern yet traditional Hong Kong breakfast.
