Spa by MTM in Causeway Bay has launched a holistic treatment that claims to harness the calming and healing properties of tea which is known to be high in antioxidants. The session starts with a refreshing oolong tea, after which I’m invited to shower in a spacious private room. My therapist comes in and performs “exhaustion releasing energy breathing techniques”, essentially a sort of aided meditation. She talks to me in a lulling voice (in Cantonese), telling me to relax each part of my body, while cosmic music plays in the background and little red and blue star lights glow on the ceiling.

Next, she massages in a pine essential oil (said to relieve respiratory problems) into my legs, arms, and abdomen, before turning me over and performing an acupressure massage on my back, neck and shoulders to unblock the meridians and loosen tight muscles. During the pre-session briefing I am asked to detail any sore points on my body so she concentrates on all the right places with deep, but not painful pressure.

Next is an aromatherapy oil massage using another herb-scented oil – to aid sleep, though I’m already deeply relaxed by this time – before applying the “dragon well tea body mask”. Containing honey to nourish the skin, this feels slightly granular, and is hot when first spread onto my body, but quickly cools, leaving me feeling slightly chilled. This is remedied with a heated blanket, and soon I’m wrapped up in what feels like a cosy, wet teabag cocoon, my arms stuck to my squelchy sides.

After giving me some more essential oils to inhale, she then delivers a gentle acupressure massage to my head, neck and face. Finally, I shower off the clay-based mask, and am given time to sit in the relaxation room, drinking hot, sweetened lemon tea and eating jelly with goji berries, wondering how it’s possible that more than two hours have gone by so fast. My skin feels soft, my mind calm, and my body rested.
