Hundreds of practitioners of Tai Chi have packed the tiny Chinatown area of Old Havana for a slow-motion celebration of the Chinese martial art.

Men, women and children in traditional outfits went through the movements meant to exercise both mind and body as tourists gawked and took pictures.

Roberto Vargas Lee, director of Havana’s main Tai Chi school, says practitioners are searching for peace, as well as seeking to maintain their health.

Vargas Lee says Saturday’s session is part of global World Tai Chi Day celebrations. He says about 8,000 people practice Tai Chi in Cuba, a country of 11 million people.

Seventy-four-year-old retiree Magaly Delgado says Tai Chi brings “serenity and tranquility.” And she adds it also helps “fight the stress of everyday life.”
