My husband and I love to eat out, but it's difficult during the week. My show is on live at 8pm so after I wrap up, I usually go home for a late dinner. Plus, I have to be a morning person as my daughter wakes up early and I want to be there for her. So, we have our dates on the weekend.
One place I like is (22 Ship Street, Wan Chai, tel: 2555 0722). It manages to be both traditional and a bit experimental. The setting is cool, too, with a mix of heritage buildings and new structures on Ship Street.
To unwind, I go to the (2 Lower Albert Road, Central, tel: 2521 1511). I adore the high ceiling and colonial atmosphere. The menu is chock-full of comfort food and my go-to item is the Hainan chicken rice. But you do have to go with someone who is a member.
I also enjoy (2/F The Galleria Plaza, 9 Queen's Road Central, tel: 2526 8798) for lunch. I also go to (3/F Bartlock Centre, 3 Yiu Wa Street, Causeway Bay, tel: 2882 8782) for the Hong Kong-style hotpot.
It's a cliché but you have to take visitors to (35 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, tel: 2544 3475) for the egg tarts, then go to (45 Cochrane Street, tel: 2541 0500) for their Hong Kong milk tea gelato. Another local treat I really enjoy is the steamed ginger milk pudding at (506 Lockhart Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2591 1837).
Recently, tiny diner with a Chinese twist (66 Staunton Street, Central, tel: 2194 0202) has become a favourite. The small eats are delicious, the service is friendly and the playlist is hot. I highly recommend the pork belly bao, with tender slow-braised pork in the middle of a steamed mantou roll. Brilliant.
In my work neighbourhood of Quarry Bay, I like (33 Tong Chong Street, tel: 2562 3444). It has great food, great ambience and I like the news theme. There's a little place nearby called (4-6 Hoi Wan Street, tel: 2613 2638), which serves the best cup of flat white coffeein town.
