Fruit Chan heads jury for 17th Taipei Film Festival
Also on the panel are Chinese actress Yao Chen, Cannes Critics' Week artistic director Charles Tesson and Taiwanese film professionals
Hong Kong director Fruit Chan Gor has been selected to head the jury at the Taipei Film Festival, which opened last Friday and runs until July 18. Chan leads a panel that includes Chinese actress Yao Chen, Cannes Critics' Week artistic director Charles Tesson and Taiwanese film professionals. The jury will award the prizes on the final day of the festival.
The festival, now in its 17th year, is bookended by a pair of Taiwanese films: Cheng Wen-tang's police drama Maverick and Tom Lin Shu-yu's romantic tear-jerker Zinnia Flower.
When NBA players Jeremy Lin and Jordan Clarkson started a game together for the first time last March, it was but a small blip in what was otherwise a disastrous season for the Los Angeles Lakers. But for many Asian-Americans and basketball players in Asia, it was an historic moment — Lin and Clarkson (who is half-Filipino) became the first Asian-American teammates to start an NBA game.
Both players recently visited Hong Kong to spend time with fans — although not together. A week after Clarkson was in town to hold a four-day basketball camp — the 23-year-old, 196cm guard also spent time playing streetball with local ballers at Carpenter Road Park in Kowloon City — Lin, who is 26 years old and 191cm tall, spent a day in Hong Kong.
Lin was at the Central Harbourfront for an Adidas event on Saturday, then visited a gospel service at Chinese University.
The Lakers are popular in Hong Kong due to the star power of Kobe Bryant, who is likely to make his way here, too, later this summer as part of his annual Nike Asia tour, so that would make three Lakers guards in Hong Kong in one summer. All we're missing is the newest guard, D'Angelo Russell.
