Review: Capelli Salon and Spa - relax and be pampered

My hair was expertly summer-proofed - without looking as though I'd just been to the salon

TIFFANY AP
Capelli Salon and Spa in Central.

South-side favourite Capelli hair salon has taken up residence in the heart of Central in the former Sense of Touch location in Arbuthnot Road, the brand's first expansion outside its original Repulse Bay home. Capelli is different in that it offers a full range of hair services from cut and colour to perm, but also spa treatments such as facials and massages.

As anyone with a thick mane of hair will tell you, indulging in some foot or facial pampering while waiting for your perm or highlights to set is the perfect combination. The salon also features a VIP room if you want some privacy to fully relax while your hair is styled. I visit to try a keratin smoothing treatment. My hair gets washed with a clarifying shampoo first (the stylists use the Global Keratin line of products from the US) to get rid of excess product and prepare my hair to absorb what comes next. I am already beginning to zone out with a magazine in hand when my stylist asks what kind of look I want from the keratin treatment.

He suggests starting the application about a centimetre from the roots so I'll retain some kind of volume. He says he can brush the lotion onto my strands in a way that will also allow it to keep some movement. That takes about an hour, then it gets blow-dried and ironed to seal it in.

The end result is that my hair is expertly summer-proofed, but doesn't look like I stepped straight out of the salon. For the first two days after keratin treatment the hair can look unnaturally straight, as you're not meant to wash it for 48 hours. Impressively, Capelli's treatment made my hair appear as if it naturally had that texture from the word go.
