Newly opened: oyster bar The Walrus in Central

If you like your raw oysters to have names like Lady Gaga and Oompa Loompa, this could be your place

FIRST SERVED

(tel: 9862 8031) on Staunton Street behind PMQ is a cute, cosy place, with a nautical theme, complete with anchor bottle openers. Opened by the Chow sisters, who own The Woods cocktail bar, this new venture is an expansion into seafood.

We tried the six-piece raw oyster platter (below, HK$258) featuring freshly shucked shellfish with creative toppings. We loved Oompa Loompa, which was a refreshing start thanks to the blood orange sorbet, diced salmon and cucumber, but That 70s Shell was on the salty side, due to the added salmon roe and caviar made from umeshu plum wine. Lady Gaga, with hot-pink pickle jelly and baby radish, had a delicious taste and texture. The raspberry octopus salad (HK$96) included greens and peeled orange wedges. Our only complaint was that it was a small portion for two people.

A good dish to nibble on with drinks is the bar snack combo (HK$130), featuring mini crabs with rolled-up nori.

Sharing the walrus po'boy (HK$88) was a good choice, a nice fluffy soft bun stuffed with cucumbers, deep-fried oysters, fish and house pickles, dressed with a light kimchi sauce.

Who can resist a seafood-themed dessert (HK$58)? Here, it's an oyster shell made of white chocolate with a scoop of sea salt caramel ice cream and biscuit crumble underneath.
