Restaurant review: Zumufi - healthy drinks and delicious panini
Welcoming, and serving good-value meals for the health conscious, this Sheung Wan restaurant is so good you'll want one in your neighbourhood
Opened in late June in Sheung Wan to the delight of health-conscious eaters, Zumufi promises to deliver nutritious treats that cater to Hong Kong's fast-paced lifestyle. The chic, brightly lit shop is welcoming, with a sofa area overlooking the narrow but bustling Wing Kut Street.
The place offers two lists of smoothies — basic fruit smoothies (HK$42) and functional ones (HK$52) that add superfoods such as acai berry, chia seed and camu camu. You can also enjoy hot- pressed panini (HK$29), which can be ordered in combos. The fillings change from time to time.
As the smoothies are fruit-based and have no milk or ice cream, they are more icy than creamy, but are delicious all the same. Skin+ is a green juice with a slightly raw taste and Energy+ is fruitier, made from pineapple, strawberry, banana and goji berry. They are miles away from the sickly sweet drinks elsewhere.
We tried two panini and liked them both. The bahn mi panini is a new item, with sliced pork that is nicely marinated, if a bit on the dry side. It goes very well with the coriander, fresh cucumber and house-made pickled carrots and daikon. The ham and Gruyère panini has a good dollop of honey mustard, while the baby spinach adds crunch.
Big eaters may complain about the size of the panini, but, for most people, the lunch combo (HK$68-HK$78) is a satisfying meal. For an extra HK$2 you can upgrade your drink from small (12oz) to large (16oz). Along with the friendly service there is a personal touch — each smoothie comes with a hand-written name tag. Zumufi is a shop you would want to appear in your own neighbourhood.
