Bass in your face
Croatia's Outlook festival has grown into Europe's leading celebration of sound system culture. Lauren Vincent previews the launch event in Hong Kong

THE OUTLOOK FESTIVAL, staged in the picturesque Croatian seaside city of Pula every summer, has evolved into Europe’s leading celebration of bass music and soundsystem culture.
And for the second year running, Hong Kong is not being left completely out of the action: local drum ‘n’ bass promoters Magnetic Soul are hosting an official Outlook festival launch party on June 8.
The party’s headline performer, Russian drum ‘n’ bass DJ Enei, and Magnetic Soul regulars DJ Saiyan and Blood Dunza (Lai Fai), will also be performing at this year’s Outlook festival, which is being held from August 29 to September 2.
As Magnetic Soul spokeswoman Mandy Hui explains: “Outlook is one of the world’s largest bass music and soundsystem festivals. Our resident DJ, Saiyan, played there last year […] and a few friends and myself went along. It was an amazing experience for all of us because it was all about the love of bass music. It’s a music festival that covers all kinds of dance music – from DJs to live set-ups.”

“Outlook is every bass music lover’s dream festival. It’s such an amazing experience and you can imagine how excited I was when I heard I was in the line-up and could play alongside so many top-notch artists.” Last year’s event in Hong Kong was headlined by Dispatch Recs, but this year will see Enei, one of UK label Critical Sound’s most important artists, make his first appearance in the city.
