Burgundy is replete with tradition and history, where old core values remain. And it is still very much a male-dominated industry.

However, a few women are rising to the challenge of running family businesses, which have been passed down through the generations.

One highly reputed producer is Domaine Parent Pommard, run by sisters Anne Parent and Catherine Fages-Parent. Anne is responsible for the viticulture and vinification side while Catherine takes care of the commercial aspects of the business.

"You have to work three times harder than any man and prove several times over that you are good at your job," says Anne.

Domaine Parent was founded in 1803 and is based in Pommard in the Côte d'Or. Pommard is known for red wines characterised by rich fruit, powerful structure and earthiness. Anne is aiming for a certain style: "Full body with depth but intensity, with great finesse and elegance."

In Burgundy, 2010 is considered to be an excellent vintage. Wine writer Clive Coates rates the wines 18.5 out of 20.

Domaine Parent Bourgogne Rouge 2010
Bourgogne Rouge is Burgundy's entry-level red wine. It can be thin, dilute and, more often than not, is a disappointment. This wine proves that it is possible to find good wines at a basic level.

Anne says the grapes, sourced from the flat part of the vineyard in Pommard and Volnay, are of good quality. "[I treat] a modest Bourgogne in the same way as a great one. We need to have good quality at this level because it is the image," she says.

Notes of fresh raspberry and other berries. Soft, well-balanced and easy to drink. Shows purity and is great value for money. HK$295

Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les Epenots 2010
This wine epitomises all the best features of the 2010 vintage. Clive Coates sums it up by saying, "The best have a lot of depth of character and real length. There is size but not bulk. They will last and last, and we should all have some in our cellars." This wine has it all.

Red berry fruit, mineral notes. Powerful, with taut structure, silky tannins. Elegant and powerful. A wine that will keep for more than a decade. HK$1,260

Domaine Parent Pommard 1er Cru Les Chaponnieres 2010
Ripe berry fruit, savoury notes. Full body, with fresh acidity and firm underlying tannins. Long finish. Still very youthful. HK$1,000
