Burgundy is replete with tradition and history, where old core values remain. And it is still very much a male-dominated industry.
However, a few women are rising to the challenge of running family businesses, which have been passed down through the generations.
One highly reputed producer is Domaine Parent Pommard, run by sisters Anne Parent and Catherine Fages-Parent. Anne is responsible for the viticulture and vinification side while Catherine takes care of the commercial aspects of the business.
"You have to work three times harder than any man and prove several times over that you are good at your job," says Anne.
Domaine Parent was founded in 1803 and is based in Pommard in the Côte d'Or. Pommard is known for red wines characterised by rich fruit, powerful structure and earthiness. Anne is aiming for a certain style: "Full body with depth but intensity, with great finesse and elegance."
In Burgundy, 2010 is considered to be an excellent vintage. Wine writer Clive Coates rates the wines 18.5 out of 20.
