Trend spotter: Glad to be plaid

Squares, tartans and chequered patterns return this autumn with bold colours and mismatched styling, writes Keira Lu Huang

Favoured by the likes of Valentino and Saint Laurent, these prints are being given a tougher edge this season. British label Hackett does this by pairing a navy and mustard chequered pea coat (HK$6,900) with a solid-colour overcoat and mustard trousers (right). We're not talking about those dull and ubiquitous blue and white chequered shirts worn by suits. Developing from a spectrum of blue, local label Moustache's colour-squared jacket (HK$3,250) brings a fresh feeling to the trend, whilst Dr. Martens boots (HK$1,900) inlay checks into black leather for attitude. If you don't want to go all out, just accent with accessories: dapper Zara cap (HK$179), Sandro scarf (HK$1,790), Massimo Dutti tie (HK$590) or the blue weekender bag from Marc by Marc Jacobs (HK$1,000) - not all at once, of course.
