Bar review: Havana Bar in Central

Kylie Knott

the standout feature of this cool bar is the spacious terrace which, on our visit, was buzzing with a cheerful post-work crowd lounging on the couches. The decor has a retro feel made authentic by salvaged doors and shutters imported from the Caribbean, and Cuban images on the walls. Staff are friendly and happy to make suggestions from the menu.

the bar can justifiably boast one of the best selections of rums in the city, including some rare labels that have been added to the menu of rum-based concoctions, mainly daiquiris and mojitos. The Luxury Mojito (HK$78), made with aged rum and topped with champagne, did not disappoint, while the literary lad among us was more than happy with his Hemingway Especial (HK$82), which had rum, grapefruit juice and Maraschino liqueur. Another friend ordered the rum cocktail Funky Old Man from Cuba (HK$78) with pomegranate juice, lime juice, a dash of crème de cassis and garnished with kiwi slices, pomegranate seeds and frozen green grapes which was, not surprisingly, a tad too sweet. Planter's Punch - Old Plantation Formula (HK$78), composed of Myers's Planter's Punch rum, orange juice, lime juice, sugar and Angostura aromatic bitters, packed a tasty punch. There's a small Thai and Mediterranean-inspired snacks menu. We tried the Thai fish cakes with sweet chilli sauce (HK$78) and Greek dolmades (rice-stuffed vine leaves with lemon and herbs, HK$78) and both were moist. There's also a selection of cigars.

take a breezy terrace, combine it with a classy cocktail list, add some Latino beats, and you have the perfect catch-up spot for friends in the heart of LKF. The only disappointment was that the Lychee and Rose Petal Daiquiri (HK$82) we ordered did not arrive but on later inspection was still added to the bill.
