Toy box: multitools

No longer the preserve of Scouts and outdoor types, every small boy's dream gadget is making a comeback as a multi-purpose item that's handy around the home and office

Gerber Steady Tripod
Useful for propping on a rock or wall to take time-delayed self-portraits, the Gerber Steady (HK$429) has built-in tripod-like features that can support a smartphone or compact camera (maximum 340g, so no D-SLRs). Two legs extend from the front of the 15cm multitool, while a screw-in component attaches either straight into a camera or a smartphone mount. Elsewhere you'll find a bottle opener, pliers and wire cutters, three screwdrivers and a couple of blades; the picture is complete.

Leatherman Skeletool
Multitools tend to be pocket-sized and easy to lose, which is why we like the Leatherman Skeletool's (HK$850) carabiner clip that doubles as a bottle opener. It's perfect for hooking on to a backpack. This is one of the best-looking multitools around, but it's useful, too; its pliers, wire cutters and swappable screwdriver bits take care of essential tasks, while the blade is solid enough to put pressure on and easy to release.

Everyone knows that what's yours is really your kids' - especially your smartphone - but when it comes to pocket tools, that's potentially a dangerous trend. My First Victorinox (HK$210) from the Swiss Army knife makers does have a 5.4cm blade, but it's curved and blunted at the tip. So, too, a serrated blade, with this 8.4cm-long multitool also including bottle and tin openers, a screwdriver, pliers, tweezers and a toothpick. Plenty to play with.
