NOM

First Served: NOM

NOM (tel: 2540 7988) stands for "not only meatballs", but other than the pizza section on the menu, it's hard to tell that the restaurant has "an Italian soul".

We visited a week after it opened on Elgin Street, and it's a nice open space decorated with stuffed birds. The staff are friendly and you'll need their assistance in figuring out some menu items because it only lists ingredients and not how they are put together.

For example, burrata/panzanella/bell pepper turned out to be burrata on a bed of sweet bell pepper sauce with the Italian bread.

Of the meatballs, we like the one with lamb and goat cheese with a tomato and olive sauce. The pizza we tasted had a thin, crisp crust.

Two of the three non-alcoholic drinks, the NoMojito and Mint Refresher were similar in taste, while the Bright and Bubbly gave no indication it would be a smoothie. A few more descriptive words on the menu would clarify things. Also new to Elgin Street is Ding Dim 1968 (tel: 9698 1968), where the two master chefs making the dim sum have more than 90 years of experience combined.

For fine dining, Holytan Grill (tel: 2351 5808) has opened in Central. Dishes are prepared first using the sous-vide method then grilled to lock in the flavour.
