Favourite Hong Kong restaurants of Jenny Zhang at Nature's Bounty

At home, I eat very healthily, thanks to my mother who makes magic with the simplest ingredients. But I like to indulge when I go out.

My favourite eatery is a hidden gem called (1/F, 16 Ashley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2957 8041). It's a down-to-earth bar with great drinks and food. It is my go-to place with friends visiting Hong Kong for the first time. The chef is off on random days so with a bit of luck you will get to try his perfectly grilled ribs. I recommend the nachos. They also make my favourite mojito, and I've tried mojitos all over town. Hands down the ginger mojito with extra ginger is the best — it has the perfect balance of smooth and spicy.

(16/F Shui Ki Industrial Building, 18 Wong Chuk Hang Road, Aberdeen tel: 2884 0768) is special because of its setting and its superb steaks cooked to perfection. I recommend making a reservation for T-Bone Tuesday. It is a four-course meal with a refreshing salad, oysters, steak and dessert for less than HK$800 per person. I went with friends and every course was delicious.

For a quick bite I frequent small local restaurants because they are far too often underappreciated, and it feels great to support neighbourhood businesses. One of my favourites is (Po Kai Mansion, 408-410 Castle Peak Road, Kwai Chung, tel: 3184 0266). It's close to my office and has a great beef brisket soup noodle with a hint of traditional Chinese medicine ingredients in the soup base. It goes wonderfully with the tender brisket.

I also love (119 Fuk Wing Street, Sham Shui Po, tel: 2715 9118) for its delicious roast goose noodle soup.

I go for Japanese when I want something healthier. I love sashimi and fatty fish is a great source of protein while providing healthy natural oils. In Wan Chai, I stop by (1 Tak Yan Street, Wan Chai, tel: 2574 9263), a tiny privately owned shop on a small side street, with a sushi bar and a few tables that are set up outside at night. The seafood is unbelievably fresh and great value. My sashimi favourites are the uni, geoduck and red shellfish. All the nigiri are delicious, too. The seared salmon belly sushi literally melts in your mouth.

As a meat lover I crave (22 Po Man Street, Tai Kok Tsui, tel: 2392 0499), a local burger joint located near Olympic Station. My favourites there are the lamb burger and the crispy pork belly burger. The lamb patty is cooked to a juicy medium rare and the pork belly is perfectly crisped. I always order the combo with the pumpkin soup.
