Sweet retreat: "Ba-na-na" waffle at The Waffle House.

CLOSED - Restaurant review: Waffle House, Causeway Bay - authentic Liege waffles

Waffle fans will be delighted by this shop, located a short distance from Times Square in Causeway Bay. Waffle House, which opened last month, claims to be the first eatery in the city to serve authentic Belgian Liege waffles.

First up was the "Ba-na-na" waffle (HK$46), topped with banana slices and a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and drizzled with chocolate sauce. It was warm and crisp on the outside, with a soft, chewy interior. The waffle was light, and not too buttery, and the vanilla ice cream tasted fresh.

We then ordered the speculoos waffle (HK$43) topped with caramel ice cream and caramel sauce. The ice cream reminded us of cookies and cream because of the biscuit crumbs inside, although it tasted of caramel. The waffle and ice cream combination was light and not too sweet.

The owner, Queeny Fong-wai, who grew up in Belgium and moved to Hong Kong with her husband six years ago, says she opened the shop to introduce real Belgian waffles to Hongkongers. The store imports just about everything from Belgium, from the flour and pearl sugar to the waffle maker and the ice cream.

"I want to bring the kind of Belgian street food to Hong Kong that everyone can enjoy," says Fong. "But we use less sugar and serve smaller portions compared to those you find in Belgium because Hongkongers are more health conscious."

For those who don't have a sweet tooth there are savoury offerings such as the waffle topped with pan-fried smoked bacon (HK$29). If we hadn't felt so full we would have tried the Belgian Pears waffle (HK$28) stuffed with Belgian pear purée.
