Make-up brands look to the lip for autumn's boldest trend, writes Tama Lung

Fashion designers are already debuting their collections for spring-summer 2013, but it was last spring's autumn-winter shows that are defining this season's make-up trends.

One of the most talked-about looks was the bold lip - whether bright red at Rochas, burgundy at Gucci or blackened at Bottega Veneta.

For our cover shoot, make-up artist Megumi Sekine introduced on-trend but still wearable lip looks with the latest products from Shiseido, M.A.C, Estée Lauder and more - captured by photographer Dan Pak and styled by Jolene Lin.

"I know there are a lot of women who are not used to wearing bold colours and dark red lipstick, but you can use different techniques to create different textures," Sekine says.

"For instance, if you use your fingertip and dab into the lips, it creates a tinted colour that is more wearable."

Those with pale skin and dark hair can follow the season's gothic trend with a dark burgundy lip shade.

"Just make sure there is no redness on the skin, especially around the nose. Make sure your skin colour is one tone and then the lip colour will pop," she says.

Sekine opted for a matte red, glossy orange, gold-flecked crimson, black-rimmed burgundy and subtle berry stain on our models Joy and Alexa.

But when it comes to choosing your own shade, she says, "it's just a matter of texture".

Even those with less-than-full pouts can benefit from a subtle tint. "Sheer colour is actually good for thin lips; it makes them look fuller," Sekine says.
