Colour and sparkle are the keys to the perfect party look this season, writes Tama Lung

With the holiday party season about to get into full swing, we dedicated this issue's cover shoot to elegant evenings on the town.

There was no shortage of suitable make-up as brands, such as Dior, Lancôme, Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent, have already debuted Christmas collections brimming with gold, shimmer and rich reds.

Make-up artist Megumi Sekine offers some tips on how to achieve the look at home. "For daytime, you can use a lot of lighter colours with shimmer, such as white or pink. At nighttime, add a little more colour and darker colours," she says. "You can use the lighter colours to soften the edges."

Sekine layered eyeliner, eye shadow, shimmer powder and false lashes on our models Claire and Maria, pairing the eye looks with soft pink or bold red lipstick. "You can't go overboard because this is the festive season," she says. "So you can add more eyeliner, more lashes and use even dark lipstick."

When it comes to sparkly make-up, however, Sekine advises a bit more caution. "I would suggest younger people use a lot of shimmer because for older, more mature skin it can exaggerate the wrinkles."

For those who do opt for a bit of sparkle, anything goes. "Shimmery colours reflect the light, so you can really play with it. Use it on the eyes, under the eyebrows and to highlight the cheekbone area as well," Sekine says.
