Trendy salons in New York serve as the inspiration for an array of new beauty spots

Fuelled by shows such as Sex and the City and the funky nail salons that appear on every city block, New York is widely considered the urban woman's beauty oasis. But Hong Kong seems to be making a run for the title, with a number of new salons styled on those in the Big Apple.

Airplay, Hong Kong's first blow-dry salon, models itself on the popular styling salons of Manhattan. The Wyndham Street "bar" offers a range of blowouts and updos (HK$280) along with complimentary drinks and desserts to get you ready for a night on the town.

Designed as "a cross between a New York loft and a London townhouse", Flawless offers facial, nail and make-up services - and just launched an extensive men's menu. The urban spa features products by Laura Mercier, Medik8, and OPI. Clients can pop in for a touch-up, a pedicure on the balcony or a customised facial treatment.

Also taking its cue from a New York loft, the Nail Library in Sheung Wan is dedicated to premium nail services. It offers everything from gel manicures to intricate nail art in an airy space that fits right in with its art gallery neighbours. Manicures start at HK$280 but are reduced to HK$264 on weekdays.
