Light touch: Eye serums
Eye serums pack powerful ingredients into a thinner formula, writes Marjorie Pearl
Depending on which expert you ask, the skin around the eyes is anywhere from three to 10 times thinner than the rest of the face. It's also often dry, sensitive and prone to inflammation. To top it off, constant blinking and squinting, combined with sun exposure and a poor diet, can lead to premature lines and wrinkles.
While eye creams have long been a staple of skincare regimens, more and more brands are developing eye serums - multitasking treatments that can be used alone or in combination with other moisturisers. Similar to face serums, these concentrated formulas are packed with active ingredients in a thinner consistency that can absorb deeper into the skin.
Guerlain's Super Aqua-Eye Serum, launched earlier this year, aims to detoxify and hydrate by facilitating the skin's microcirculation process. Yeast and ruscus extracts treat dark circles and puffiness, while the serum-cream texture refreshes and hydrates on contact. Guerlain's recommended application includes a four-step massage to decongest and refresh.
Featuring a blend of powerful antioxidants, SkinCeuticals AOX+ Eye Gel is designed to protect and treat under-eye skin. The serum-in-a-gel also includes a botanical extract to support circulation, and caffeine to reduce fluid congestion and reduce the appearance of under-eye bags. It can be applied immediately after cleansing and before eye cream.
Vichy's LiftActiv Serum 10 Eyes and Lashes goes one step further, targeting crow's feet, under-eye wrinkles and weak eyelashes. The lightweight yet concentrated serum contains 10 per cent rhamnose - a naturally occurring sugar said to reduce the appearance of wrinkles - and hyaluronic acid and ceramides to hydrate the skin and strengthen lashes.
The companion product to Estée Lauder's cult Advanced Night Repair serum, Advanced Night Repair Eye Serum Infusion uses the same Chronolux technology to boost overnight repair processes. The potent serum diminishes the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, puffiness, dark circles and dryness. It also features antipollution technology, making it suitable for daytime use as well. Estée Lauder offers a range of eye creams to treat various concerns and age groups.
Swiss skincare brand La Prairie calls its Essence of Skin Caviar Eye Complex a "mini eyelift" - instantly firming the skin and masking imperfections. The lightweight serum is designed to improve skin tone and texture while reducing fine lines and signs of fatigue. It can be used alone as an under-eye make-up primer or in combination with richer eye creams.
