Gold Coast Prime Rib: casual setting belies faultless and filling portions

GOLD COAST PRIME RIB
Lobby Lounge, Gold Coast Hotel Hong Kong, 1 Castle Peak Road, Gold Coast, 2452 8636

This new steakhouse at the Gold Coast Hotel serves prime cuts paired with classic sides and selected wines. The setting is casual - in the lobby with great views of the Gold Coast gardens, pool and beachside. Tables are not too close together in a spacious dining area.

We started with a classic martini while perusing the menu which offers sets from HK$288 to HK$488, including selected cuts with salad, soup or dessert and a side with gravy. We went for the à la carte and started with chopped salad topped with seafood (HK$168), which was enough to share and was fresh and light.

This was followed by a classic French onion soup - a thick rich onion broth topped with cheese and a staple on many steakhouse menus (HK$98). For mains, we were recommended the signature prime rib served tableside (HK$368) and we chose sides of garlic mushrooms, creamy spinach, mashed potatoes with black truffle jus and truffle fries (HK$60 apiece). Sauces include black pepper with Cognac, five peppercorn and black truffle gravy.

We could not fault the prime rib or the side dishes - the portions were generous and the service attentive and friendly. Prime rib is a traditional roast served bone in, as it tastes better. A dessert of traditional apple crumble with vanilla ice cream (HK$88) was a perfect end to a delicious meal.

Again we shared as we were full but we had to try it. The crumble was perfectly crunchy and the apple deliciously sweet.
