DJ Hardwell Talks Charity, Loneliness and Steak

Robbert van de Corput, the superstar 27-year-old Dutch artist, was voted the World's No. 1 DJ by DJ Magazine in 2013 and 2014. He’s bringing his biggest tour yet to The Venetian, promoting his latest album “United We Are.”

Voted as the World's No. 1 DJ two years in a row, has that changed how you approach your music? No, I still put a lot of pressure on myself to achieve big goals with my music. When you lose the passion is when you change your approach!

Tell us a bit about your project United We Are Foundation? My manager Anna Knaup and I set up the Foundation after a recent tour of India where we saw these young children sleeping rough under a billboard of my name, which really hit me hard! I knew something had to change and so we created the United We Are Foundation as a way of helping these children have a better start in life. On December 13 I’ll return to Mumbai to play to 100,000 thousand fans—we’ll be making history, but more importantly through donations and pledges we will be able to help give these children a better future.

Is the life of a DJ a lonely one? I can imagine for some it can get lonely. It's certainly not a lifestyle for everyone, that's for sure. I'm such a workaholic that I enjoy being on the road because it's gives me time to think and work on my music. You're constantly meeting people when you're traveling, other DJ friends, new and old fans, promoters, friends and family, it's really varied. So I don't really get lonely that much these days.

Which is worse: a commitment-phobe or someone who is flaky? Depends on the person and the situation. In life you need to be able to trust people. If you can't rely on them then they're maybe not worth having in your life.

If you had to eat only one food item for the rest of your life, what would it be? When I'm on the road I enjoy trying steak dishes. So anywhere that does a great steak gets my vote.

Do you like Chinese food, and what do you plan to eat while you're here? I love Chinese food. Anything a local chef can surprise me with I am always willing to try it.

What do you have in store for us at The Venetian? It's going to be a wild show! Fans can expect something really special on the night. Macau is the perfect destination for a DJ to go and play: It has a really vibrant scene and it's always a great place to relax, eat out and soak up the nightlife.
