Learning Mandarin? You Need These Literal Translations of Top 40 Hits
Which song goes "zuo zuo zuo zuo zuo zuo"?
Learning Mandarin? Love Top 40 hits? You could do worse than check out this video by Taiwanese Youtubers TGOP ("This Group Of People").
The group posted the video to their official Youtube channel on Tuesday, and it's gone viral since. In it, they've created a mashup of 25 music video covers of hit English songs, with lyrics translated literally into Mandarin and Taiwanese—and with music videos that parody the originals, too. Mandarin hits include songs by The Weeknd, One Direction, Taylor Swift, Flo Rida and Pharell and all the songs are presented as a mock TV advertisement for the compilation album "NOW WTF 25."
TGOP unveiled the video to celebrate hitting 1 million followers on both their Facebook page and Youtube channel. They say it took more than three months of preparation and 37 hours of recording and filming.
TGOP was formed in 2011 by a group of Taiwanese drama students who regularly upload videos, including parodies of music videos and micro-movies. Their most famous works include a Taiwanese parody of PSY's 2012 smash hit "Gangnam Style."
