It doesn’t take a car lover to like Mercedes me Hong Kong (tel: 2895 7398). Located in Central, the concept store powered by Mercedes-Benz and its local retailer Zung Fu is all about applying the German carmaker’s lifestyle philosophy across disciplines.

Guests see an open-wheel race car at the entrance and a showroom equipped with an interactive system allowing you to configure your own automobile and get information on the latest models. But if you can’t afford the pricey cars, you can console yourself with a good meal in the sleek restaurant.

It’s brought to you by Maximal Concepts, the team behind popular establishments including Blue Butcher and Mott 32. The menu shows inspirations from Spain, Japan and Peru.

Our starter of sea urchin (HK$210 for three pieces) on a bed of nori cracker with oyster leaf and ponzu foam, is messy to eat but bursts with flavours. The fresh burrata (HK$190) is creamy and tasty even without the gazpacho poured over it at the table. The hamachi tiradito with habanero-mango sauce (HK$160) is an appetising pairing, although the other dishes are more exciting.

Duck egg yolk with sobrassada, potato foam and crouton (HK$100 for two pieces) balances contrasting textures and flavours, while the tiger prawn shiso roll (HK$180 for four pieces) was a winner because of the freshness of the seafood. Iberico pork presa (HK$360), has tender and juicy meat, and the sweetness from the smoked piquillo peppers and flavourful sauce help elevate the dish. The thick-skinned chicken empanada (HK$110 for four pieces) was dull, although the refreshing and spicy pico de gallo perked up the flavours slightly.

Until October 26, Mercedes me is open for dinner only (after then, it will also serve lunch), and a complimentary round of cocktails will be served in return for feedback.
