Behind the label: Be&D

Who started it? Be&D is the madcap creation of New York designer Steve Dumain. After an eclectic career in business, script writing and film producing, Dumain turned his hand to shoe design and established Be&D in 2004. The brand's unusual mixture of humour and luxury has gained a celebrity following, with fans including Charlize Theron, Daisy Lowe and Katy Perry. Be&D's rise to fame has led to collaborations on ready-to-wear collections for such fashion mainstays as Diane Von Furstenberg and Rachel Roy.

Why we love it: because of the playful, subversive nature of Dumain's shoes, using elaborate, decorative prints of everything from guns, skeletons and stilettos to inject a bit of fun and non-conformity into footwear.

What we'd pick: the Big City Bright Lights white hi-top (left; HK$1,490), with a pink stiletto print, puts a sporty spin on Sex and the City. Another gem from the autumn-winter collection is the Big City Pistol trainer (right; also HK$1,490), which pokes fun at all that macho gangsta posturing.

Where can you get it? Be&D is available at Harvey Nichols, The Landmark, Central, tel: 3695 3388.
