Who started it? Jewellery designer Chris Habana grew up amid New York's counter-culture of the 1990s and his pieces are shot through with that edginess. It's a look that has caught the eye of stores such as Oak, Urban Outfitters and Lane Crawford. Habana, who launched his eponymous label in 2004, has earned a celebrity following that includes the likes of Drew Barrymore and Bjork. His work has been featured in magazines such as Italian Vogue and i-D. Last year, he launched a diffusion line called My Enemy.

Why we love it: the pieces are unisex and use gothic iconography, such as bones, cages and crosses, with a pop twist. Cast in brass with different plate finishes, his work manages to be both playful and controversial. Inspired by sci-fi and fantasy, the jewellery is bold but never too serious.

What we'd pick: the Holy Trinity drop earrings (left; HK$630) and the Five-in-One Graphic necklace (top right; HK$1,620) instantly toughen up a simple outfit during the day and create a strong statement for a night on the town.

Where can you get it? Chrishabana is available at The 9th Muse, 12/F, 1 Lyndhurst Tower, 1 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central, tel: 2537 7598; the9thmuse.com
