Beauty buzz: lip balms

Vanessa Yung

Keeping your lips soft and smooth in winter requires maintenance. Whether you need a daily hydration fix or want fuller, glossier lips, these balms are sure to keep the smile on your face.

(HK$240) is a minty, pale balm with a soft texture that makes it a joy to apply. The balm absorbs quickly and gives a pleasantly cool, tingling sensation - proof that one of the key ingredients - menthol, which freshens and stimulates skin - is at work. Another ingredient, zinc oxide, serves as a natural sunscreen and promotes healing. Available at Joyce Beauty and 10/10 Space.

The tangerine scent of (HK$140) is subtle and refreshing but the balm itself isn't the easiest to apply: it takes several layers before the lips feel prepped, which is good for those who like only the thinnest layer of product on their skin. Infused with vitamin E, soya bean, olive and safflower seed oils, bisabolol and beeswax, this Australian-made balm can also be used on hands and elbows. Available at all Jurlique stores.

It's claimed (HK$350) not only nourishes and hydrates lips, but also plumps them and removes crease lines - courtesy of its hyaluronic filling spheres, which swell the skin to conceal wrinkles. Made in France, other naturally derived emollients in the creamy, pink formula include eucalyptus, calendula and apricot seed oils, beeswax, cocoa butter, shea butter and vitamin C. The effect is long lasting, leaving lips smooth for hours. Available at Joyce Beauty.

(HK$149) contains all-natural ingredients, more than 60 per cent of which are organic. The balm works best as a daily protective base. Argania and rose-hip oils nourish and contain anti-wrinkle properties while honey calms and heals. The French-made balm feels supple and moist but doesn't last long. Those with dry lips may need to apply often. Available at Nest Beauty, Causeway Bay.
