Wheel estate Patronage from Kanye West can be the kiss of death for some brands but, thankfully, super exclusive French luggage and bag maker Goyard has managed to survive the glare of celebrity. We're big fans of the Voltaire tote bag (right; HK$16,500) while the convenience of the Bourget trolley case (far right; HK$42,000) gives it added appeal. Goyard is in The Peninsula, Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2722 0398.

Check mates As with other sectors of menswear, suiting goes through fads. New fits, trendy detailing and cutting-edge fabrics can, ironically, date rather quickly, so the smart man buys his suits from established names that produce timeless garments. Ralph Lauren Purple Label is one such name and its classic suits for autumn-winter maintain the sharp cuts but add interesting and bold patterns, such as the ensemble of check suit (HK$52,000), dress shirt (HK$4,100), tie (HK$1,490) and buckle shoes (all far left; HK$12,500). For something a little less bold but no less striking there's the brown suit (HK$50,500), dress shirt (HK$4,100), tie (HK$1,790) and brown leather shoes (all left; HK$11,000). Ralph Lauren is in The Landmark, Central, tel: 2869 0388.

League of gentlemen Aside from the ubiquitous rugby shirt, fashion and the sport are not immediate bedfellows. French brand Eden Park, somewhat confusingly named after the All Black fortress in Auckland, New Zealand, plays to the game's heritage while also creating stylish men's clothing. We love the rugged double breasted short coat (below right; HK$4,850) and the more gentlemanly long coat (below; HK$8,650). Eden Park is in Elements Mall, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2196 8692.

Go Weston, young man French shoemakers are often unfairly overlooked in favour of fashion-forward Italian brands and the traditional English brands from the Northampton area. JM Weston, despite its anglicised name, is one of the few French shoemakers that command respect and it's not hard to see why, with footwear such the Claridge Derby shoe (below; HK$7,300) and the Claridge black calfskin loafer (left; HK$6,700). JM Weston is in The Galleria, 9 Queen's Road Central, tel: 2234 7288.
