Behind the label: Marie France Van Damme

Abid Rahman

Who's behind it? Globe-trotting Canadian Marie France Van Damme started her eponymous label last year, after honing her skills on the manufacturing side of the fashion industry, creating ready-to-wear lines for the likes of Marks and Spencer and Saks Fifth Avenue. Her Hong Kong-based resort-wear brand takes inspiration from the designer's travels.

Why we love it: fabrics such as diaphanous silk chiffon and luscious silk sateen are always winners in our book, while the care taken over silhouettes makes each piece as wearable as it is arresting.

What we'd pick: brands such as Marie France Van Damme inject a bit of exotic glamour. We love the youthful and free-flowing bright A-line gold skirt (HK$4,280) with vest (both above left; HK$1,090) and we're quite partial to the effortlessly languid long kaftan with snake-skin pattern (above right; HK$4,630).

Where can you get it? Marie France Van Damme is available at Lane Crawford, IFC Mall, Central, tel: 2118 3388.
