Macho peacho The cold weather makes certain people feel the need to hike, climb, fish and do all manner of rugged and manly things. For the rest of us, it's an excuse to get the kit and just pretend we're all outdoorsy and macho. Whatever your appetite for adventure, a Bothos bag is a great accessory and we love the Sherpa model, which comes in nylon (above left; HK$3,800) and a hard-wearing matt fabric (above right; HK$3,500). Bothos is at 20 Hollywood Road, Central, tel: 2526 9222.

Hop, skip, jumper Any man will tell you the temptation is always there to blow the wage packet on one or two fancy jackets or yet another pair of shoes, but reason must prevail. Get the basics right first this winter, with a nice, warm, plain woollen v-neck jumper from Jet 8 by ST Dupont (above; HK$2,380 each). Jet 8 is in The Landmark, Central, tel: 2810 4233.

Laddies and gents If, on the other hand, you're the impatient sort and find reading too time-consuming, pop along to the Hackett store and try out one of these looks. First up we have the classic country gent ensemble of check jacket (HK$7,000), puffer vest (HK$2,300) and trousers (HK$1,800) finished off with a tie (HK$1,100) and shirt (all above left; HK$1,500). For the office, there's the double-breasted suit (HK$11,200), shirt (HK$1,500) and key accessories of tie (HK$1,100) and pocket square (all above right; HK$420). The bags, sadly, aren't available in Hong Kong. Hackett is in Eton Tower, 8 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay, tel: 3101 0008.

Stir crazy Formal shoes can be either boring and traditional or utterly eccentric. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of a happy medium - until you see this season's offerings from Giorgio Armani. We're rather fond of the croc-skin-effect lace-up (above; HK$7,950) and the snake-skin slip-on (top; HK$5,950), which come in safe and traditional black but have a certain bravura aspect to them. Giorgio Armani is in Chater House, Central, tel: 2532 7700.
