Wondering China, Central

Before I dig in, I have to admit: well spotted. Few seem to have recognised that the flat from Chloe's autumn-winter collection is the exact shape of a kung fu slipper. In fact, the brand itself has simply named it the Emilie ballerina. Whatever they call it, I have to say it's rather brilliant and exquisitely well made, in plain black or metallic gold leather (HK$3,970 a pair; Lane Crawford, IFC Mall, Central, tel: 2118 7777) or snake-print pony hair (HK$5,820). Much as I love a bargain, a discerning eye will immediately pick up on superior craftsmanship, materials and finish. Nothing could be more charming though than a handmade kung fu shoe from Tam Kwok-kwong's 50-square-foot stall in Sheung Wan (190 Hollywood Road, just up the steps towards Pound Lane, tel: 2547 1368, mobile: 6420 2624). Choose from one of the pre-made shoes in canvas or leather, or let Mrs Tam measure you for your very own custom-made pair (HK$298 to HK$750). And, while you didn't find it in the fancy-fied Central Yue Hwa Chinese Products Emporium, you will find the classic men's shoe in black canvas with white rubber sole at its main store, in Jordan (HK$298; 301 Nathan Road, tel: 3511 2222).
