Perfect pal Forget dogs, man's best friend is the right coat: you don't have to walk it or feed it and it's much easier to look after. So when you're out hunting for your next one, choose wisely. We suggest popping by Moncler and picking up either the Louis pea coat (above right; HK$10,150) or the Grimbert long coat (above left; HK$11,200). Moncler is in IFC Mall, Central, tel: 2524 7779.

Going Dutch A new year deserves a new look and who better to provide it than one of our favourite menswear designers, Dutch master Lucas Ossendrijver, at Lanvin. We're rather wrapped up by the ensemble of long coat (HK$41,100), wide-bottomed trousers (HK$12,000), shirt (HK$2,500), a 3D twist effect jumper (HK$10,800), moccasins (HK$8,600) and gloves (all above left; HK$3,100). And there's more than a hint of dandy futurism with this look of coat with quilted patches (HK$40,400), evening jacket with shawl collar (HK$32,300), trousers (HK$8,700), shirt (HK$4,000) and mid-top trainers (all above right; HK$8,200). Lanvin is in IFC Mall, tel: 2234 7686.

Hip trippersIter Hominis roughly means "man's journey" in Latin and by the look of the brand's new store in Sheung Wan, it has made stops in Williamsburg, Dalston and Kreuzberg for inspiration. Our inner hipster is drawn to the bags, particularly the coated moleskin and black leather duffle bag (above left; HK$1,780) and the black sheep skin leather office bag (above right; HK$3,200). Iter Hominis is at 242 Hollywood Road, tel: 2858 2003.

Cock of the walk There's a time to be serious and a time to be, well, less so. When you try to be both, things can go awry, but there are occasions when a mix of whimsy and solemnity have rather stylish results: take these Sergio Rossi shoes, for example. We recommend the classic brown leather lace-up brogue with a blue sole (above; HK$13,510) and the leather buckled shoe with an arresting green sole (left; HK$16,970). Sergio Rossi is in Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2918 0872.
