Something new: the name's Bond, Baby Bond

There are many variables when it comes to the cost of raising a child: will junior be kitted out in Louis Vuitton or H&M; will his first birthday party be in a marquee or a McDonald's? Needless to say, for many Hong Kong parents, nothing is too expensive when it comes to their little bundle of joy.

British firm Silver Cross appears to have noticed there might be a few dollars to be made here in the luxury-baby-goods department. The pram manufacturer has teamed up with elite carmaker Aston Martin to create the ultimate stroller - the Surf Aston Martin Edition (left). And of the 800 released worldwide, 100 have been made available for the Hong Kong market.

Designed with the Aston Martin One-77 special-edition supercar in mind "the chassis has a polished black finish, very similar to that of the car", says Nick Paxton, chief executive of Silver Cross. "In the materials we used - the leather and Alcantara suede - and in every other detail on the pram, we have tried to emulate Aston Martin", a marque favoured by fictional Secret Service agent 007.

Alloy wheels; a super-light chassis; high-performance, water-resistant fabric: the spec-sheet makes this buggy sound like it's ready for the open road. Oh, and the air-ride suspension should make the handling a joy.

Upmarket London department store Harrods received more than 100 orders in the space of three days following the pram's British launch, says Paxton.

Each buggy is individually numbered with an engraved, brushed-chrome plaque, and while agent "007 months" might not appreciate the craftsmanship that has gone into his or her conveyance, mummy and daddy can rest assured that the HK$33,800 price tag has bought them an exclusive slice of British heritage.

Silver Cross' first shop in Asia is in Ocean Terminal, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2736 4777.
