Who started it? Born and raised in Hong Kong, Carmen Chan took an astute, if unconventional, detour into the world of jewellery by studying economics, marketing and corporate communications. She launched her eponymous line this year, applying her business skills to a passion for bling.
Why we love it: upon first glance, Chan's concoctions seem like mere hipster whimsy; but appearances can be deceiving. This is a highly personal collection, with the designer taking inspiration from sources as diverse as Marilyn Monroe, Mae West, Chuck Palahniuk and her hometown. That all adds up to singular designs that stand out in the overprocessed world of accessories.
What we'd recommend: Chan's debut collection, A Sweet Escape, is a series of necklaces influenced by exotic Asian and Native American designs. We like the Turquoise Bird Let's Dance necklace (above right; HK$2,380), a bright and fun piece that blends white agates, moonstone, Swarovski crystals and feathers. We're also into the Indiana Girl Let's Play (above left; HK$2,180), which is a little more refined, with its use of red jade, yellow quartz, shells and sterling-silver pendants. From her latest Messenger collection, the Feel ring in sterling silver (below; HK$980) stands out for its subtlety.
