The Dictator: on style, she rules
Is it true CK’s got this nail polish that’s like a perfume too? OMG, where can I buy some? I went to their shop near my mum’s office but they haven’t got any.
Smell My Fingers, Central
The Dictator rules: Yeah, but no, but yeah, but no. The new CK One Color Long Wear + Shine Nail Color comes in more than 10 hues and has a colourless top coat, which is also scented. Too bad it just launched on Ulta.com, which doesn’t deliver internationally, and the brand has confirmed it will not be sold in Hong Kong for the foreseeable future. Relax. There’s no need to make a stink about it. Dab the brand’s eau de toilette or body lotion on your digits and move on (about HK$390 for a scent plus moisturiser set; www.calvinklein.com). Still want to try scented nail polish? Then ask for mummy’s credit card and try one of the following. Tuff Scent has been doing it for ages, in everything from a deep red that smells like roses, to pearlescent blue in spearmint, to sparkly gold in grapefruit (HK$78 each; www.tuffscent.com). Revlon does a scented nail enamel series, too, although we haven’t seen it in the SAR. Order online from a selection of 16 self-explanatory product names, such as Bubble Gum, Grape Icy and Raspberry Rapture (HK$37 each; www.amazon.com). Or try the Models Own Fruit Pastel range in Apple Pie, Banana Split, Blueberry Muffin, Strawberry Tart or Grape Juice (HK$65.95 each). Other brands doing them include LA Girl, Rimmel and Forever 21.
I really want the T.U.K. “Mondo Creepers in Black Suede with White Interlace” that I saw on Karmaloop.com. Do you know where I can find them in Hong Kong?
Creeping Feeling, Pok Fu Lam
The Dictator: Yeah, in your mailbox when you finally stop dithering and just click the “Add to Shopping Cart” button. At about HK$580 per pair, that’s a good deal (depending on extra delivery charges). I guess you’ve been indoctrinated by celebs such as Rihanna and Rita Ora. The good news is that obscure Gothic fashion shops in Hong Kong do stock the T.U.K. brand, including Gothic Wish (HK$599 to HK$850; 2/F, 36 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2312 2344). Visit www.tukshoes.com for more locations. Whatever you end up buying, do heed the sizing notes. These shoes usually come in men’s sizing, so women should take their own size and subtract two (if you’re a size 8, then you’ll be buying a size 6, duh). Now, although the brand you mentioned is based in the United States, the style is actually British. It apparently started with postsecond world war desert boots, which were transformed for the dandyish, rockabilly style of the Teddy Boys of the 1950s and then made famous by punk fashion pioneers Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood in the 1970s. Famous British creepers brand Underground just so happens to be sold here, too (HK$1,500 to HK$1,950; LAB Concept, Queensway Plaza, Admiralty, tel: 2118 6008).
