Ramble on This time of year is often perfect hiking weather: not too wet and, more importantly, not so unbearably humid that you need to strategically talc certain parts of your body. If you are going to hit the trail, we recommend a sturdy pair of Patagonia hiking shoes such as the entry-level Fore Runner (left top; HK$989), which is lightweight and perfect for less taxing walks. For more advanced rambling, there's the Patagonia Drifter (left below; HK,399), which comes with Gore-tex and Vibram and all sorts of bells and whistles. Patagonia is in Times Square, Causeway Bay, tel: 2506 0677.

Thorny issue Floral prints for men have been in for a couple of seasons now and, if you're feeling brave, we'd like to point out a flowery offering from Hong Kong shirtmaker R-edition: the Thornhill Daphne (above right; HK,250). For something a little more conservative, there's the rather nifty Munny Blue Zebra (above left; HK,380). R-edition is available at Kapok, 3 Sun Street, Wan Chai, tel: 2520 0114.

Enlightened shades The suggestion that sunglasses are becoming more subtle might sound ridiculous, given the huge number of people in Hong Kong who wear them indoors and at night. But still, gone are the gawdy, logo-heavy sunglasses of yesteryear and in their place come more restrained and classic shades such as these specimens from Calvin Klein. We love the blue-tinted navigator style (above right; HK$1,790) and the brown tint aviator (above left; also HK$1,790). The sunglasses are available at Hong Kong Optical, 9 Yee Wo Street, Causeway Bay, tel: 2576 2669.

Timeless essence Skirts, nose rings, girlfriend jeans: you will never catch the folks at Alfred Dunhill succumbing to any of these phenomena. The English menswear staple is immune to fads, its clothes having a timeless quality with the added bonus that their multiseasonal nature is kind on the wallet. We like the casual summer look of navy merino wool shawl cardigan (HK$5,595), denim cotton shirt (HK$2,250) and cotton chinos (all above left; HK$3,100). We also love the smart-casual look of grey wool blazer (HK$9,995), cotton oxford stripe shirt (HK$2,595) and stone cotton chinos (HK$3,100) with silk polka-dot pocket square (all above right; HK$995). Alfred Dunhill is in Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2537 1009.
