Summer days might mean wearing as little as possible to stave off the sweat, but the cooler evenings mean chic soirees, and one can't just turn up in flip-flops and an old T-shirt.

Long shot Jean Paul Gaultier has always balanced French style with casual looks, and its summer offerings this season are no different. We particularly like this buttoned and belted long blue dress (HK$18,380), perfect for either the day or night. We're also into this wraparound skirt (HK$7,980), with its hypnotic pattern and ample room for movement. Jean Paul Gaultier is available at Pacific Place, tel: 2918 0374.

Rare breed The ubiquity of luxury brands, and their knock offs means it's often hard to find something a bit special. One solution is to go local and Jennifer Mak's chic handbags fit the bill perfectly. Her creations are made from exotic skins, and two in particular stand out: the Isabella HK$11,700) is a shoulder bag with crocodile accents that can convert into a clutch. There's also the Sienna (HK$19,013), a large-sized hobo bag made from python with a crocodile handle and lined with lambskin. Jennifer Mak is available at

Flat surfaces When it comes to heels, every store seems to stock row upon row of towering pairs you can barely walk in. For something more suited to everyday wear, check out the stylish yet affordable offerings in Miu Miu's pre-fall collection. The ribbon-bow version (HK$5,350) is made from suede and has a classically Italian pointed toe, a more sophisticated option than round toes. And just try resisting this nice, two-tone pair of kitten heels (HK$5,250), made from patent leather and with a laser-cut pattern. Miu Miu is available at Pacific Place, tel: 2918 4616.

Perfect pair Collaborations in the fashion world often seem like gimmicks to get us to buy "exclusive" and "limited edition" pieces. But every once in a while a great pairing comes along with a truly innovative collection. Alberta Ferretti's teaming up with UK eyewear brand Culter and Gross - a meeting of sleek Italian designs and subtle British craftsmanship - is one such that piqued our interest. We like this tortoise-shell pair (HK$4,180) - despite the fact that the style is on its way out - mostly for its oversized 1970s aesthetic. We're also partial to this geek-chic pair of light brown frames (HK$4,180), a slightly misshapen round pair standing out in our hipster world of thick black frames. Alberta Ferretti X Culter and Gross is available at Visual Culture Optical Boutique, Ocean Terminal, tel: 2377 3388.
