Eastern & Oriental Hotel in Penang

Travellers' checks

From the mid-19th century, through the peak of its Belle Epoque heyday, to the 1920s, the fresh air of the French Riviera and its informal capital, Nice, drew tens of thousands of tourists each year - but mostly during winter, which was "The Season" in those days. Most hotels, and all of the grand ones along the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, would close down in April or May, and remain shuttered until late October or early November. British and Russian tourists (comprising the bulk of foreign visitors at the time) arrived in winter to escape the cold of home, but in summertime had no need of warmer climes. The only place that stayed open year-round was Monte Carlo, which offered the perennial pleasure of the gaming table. Nowadays, of course, the summertime is high season and, in winter, the tourists - in search of pleasure more than good health - arrive in much smaller numbers. Hotels drop their rates and flights become cheaper, but the weather still hovers in the pleasant mid to late teens centigrade (and even higher further along the coast at Menton and Beaulieu-sur-Mer). As an escape from Hong Kong's pollution, Nice in winter is as appealing today as it was for the tubercular tourists of 100 and more years ago, and the old winter season is ripe for rediscovery. A flight via Paris with Air France is the easiest way to arrive, with Milan by Cathay Pacific being another option if you want to make your way partly by train and take in the Italian Riviera en route.

An interesting opportunity for anyone thinking about an African safari trip, the SkySafari is an eight-day jaunt around Tanzania in a Cessna Grand Caravan (fortunately, that's a plane, not a mobile home) with overnight stays at Elewana Collection lodges. As well as aerial views of Africa's noble fauna, guests can look forward to "tented rooms that pay homage to the mobile camps of the 1930s and exude decadence reminiscent of African high society life in days gone by". In between all the white mischief, highlights include the Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Arusha National Park. The trip starts at Kilimanjaro International Airport, which sounds rather remote but can be reached from Hong Kong with only one change of aircraft if you fly via Doha with Qatar Airways, via Amsterdam with KLM or via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. The eight-day package starts from US$6,539 per person throughout November and the first half of December. For more details, go to www.skysafari.com.
Sailing in a similar region to the Amanresorts coastal cruiser mentioned here last month, Alila Hotels and Resorts' traditionally modelled vessel, called Alila Purnama, has just started operating around Indonesia's remote Raja Ampat Islands. Seven days' full charter starts at US$54,000, which includes live-aboard meals and accommodation for 10 people, unlimited dives, water activities and shore excursions, which isn't too extortionate if you can muster a full complement of nine friends/colleagues/family members to chip in. As with the Amanresorts' Amanikan excursion (see www.amanresorts.com) you'll have to make your own way to and from Sorong Airport via Singapore, Bali or Jakarta. See the ship's substantial website at www.alilapurnama.com for more details and reservations.
Swire Travel has some reasonable mid-range hotel offerings with its two-night Penang Take-A-Break package, with the Hydro Hotel, Copthorne Orchid and Flamingo by the Beach all coming in at just under HK$2,000 (closer to HK$2,500 after you add tax and fuel surcharges) per person, twin share. From a package price starting at HK$2,960, however, you can stay in a Superior Suite at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel, with deluxe rooms at its lesser-known sister property, the Lone Pine Hotel, over on the island's north shore at Batu Ferringhi, available from about the same price. Round-trip, economy-class flights with Cathay Pacific and breakfast are included.
