The Dictator: On style, she rules

I heard a designer has released some clothes with the artist Damien Hirst or someone of that ilk? How clever! I love his work, but what does it look like and is there any of it in Hong Kong?

The Dictator rules: What? Like collaborations between artists and designers are something new? Ever heard of Salvador Dali? He and designer Elsa Schiaparelli created some of the most iconic pieces in the history of fashion. Paul Poiret sought inspiration from the works of Raoul Dufy. Yves Saint Laurent had his Piet Mondrian collection in the 1960s. Were you in a coma for all the Marc Jacobs-era Louis Vuitton collections with Takashi Murakami, Stephen Sprouse, Richard Prince and Yayoi Kusama? Some would say, anyway, that certain fashion designers elevate their work to the level of art, both in their creations and in their presentations to the public. And it goes both ways. At Art Basel Miami Beach earlier this month, we saw fashion objects and lifestyle products by Tracey Emin, Doug Schwartz, Wim Delvoye, Todd James and even Yves Klein (from his archives). OK, rant over. Alexander McQueen has celebrated the 10th anniversary of its famous skull scarf with a limitededition collection in collaboration with Damien Hirst, he of the formaldehyde shark and diamondencrusted skull. Designs include skulls and some of Hirst’s recurring motifs such as butterflies and insects. The cashmere range comes in 56.4-inch squares and includes 11 different patterns (HK$9,100 each). In the same size, you could choose from eight versions in silk chiffon (HK$4,900), or seven prints in silk pongee (HK$5,100). There are also four patterns in the 35.1-inch squared silk twill (HK$4,000; all available at Alexander McQueen, Elements, 1 Austin Road West, Kowloon, tel: 2649 3098).

I need one easy piece to spruce up the plain outfits I plan to pack for my Christmas holiday. I’ve looked around, but I really have my heart set on a metallic blouse I thought I saw but haven’t been able to find again. All I’ve found are jackets, but that’s not the look I’m going for. Am I crazy?

The Dictator: Probably, but not for that reason. Kate Spade’s whole holiday campaign is based on the line “All that glitters.” And the collection delivers – with sparkly bags, clothes and accessories, including the Haley top with a bubbly multicoloured print on silk/ lurex (HK$2,600; Ocean Centre, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2110 3555). The boxy cut is very contemporary and wearable in a Marni sort of way, with short sleeves perfect for layered winter dressing. DKNY corroborates that theory with a shirt of similar shape but in a gold cubic jacquard (HK$2,790; Silvercord, 30 Canton Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2377 9900). Juicy Couture has a nice surprise Christmas gift in the form of an elegant and sophisticated gold lamé tuxedo blouse (HK$1,690; Ocean Terminal, tel: 2118 8236).
Other brands to try: Saint Laurent and Anna Sui.
