A Mid-Levels flat is a riot of colour, echoing its tenant’s vibrant personality

To say Aishani Khan’s flat is bursting with life would be an understatement. The walls are awash with striking artwork, rugs jostle for space on the floor and knick-knacks and curios cover every surface.
“I’ve always lived in busy homes and I am most comfortable surrounded by things I have collected over the years,” says Khan. “I love colour and different cultures – be they Chinese or Indian, African or European – and the way their styles can be so different and yet co-exist.”
Born in India, Khan, her investment banker husband and their now 11-year-old daughter moved to Hong Kong from Mumbai 6½ years ago and have lived in their 2,400 sq ft, three-bedroom, two-bathroom Mid- Levels apartment for most of that time. They sometimes suffer power outages because of electricity overloads but, Khan says, this problem is balanced by the apartment’s advantages, such as high ceilings.
“These apartments are such gems,” says Khan. “They are old and a bit run down and have no facilities but once people move in, it is difficult to move out because it would be very hard to find something comparable.”
The way in which Khan has furnished the apartment echoes her personality. The colours are bright, the objects are interesting and the furniture is very welcoming.
