The Dictator: on style, she rules

Oh, get over yourself and your "delicate fingers". Are you showing off or looking for a solution? Well, then have it resized already! The original jeweller should have a courier to safely transport the ring to wherever in the world they might be. It'd be wise to ask them for an official appraisal, too, especially for insurance purposes.

You have lots of different, trustworthy options right here in Hong Kong. If you are truly as affluent and patrician as you try so strenuously to appear, then you must already have a local, old-style jeweller for simple gold and gemstone pieces. The work should only take a few days and cost about HK$1,000. Honest, worthy places exist all over town, and they will always examine and test the stones in front of you and provide a receipt. Be extremely specific about what work you do or don't want done.

For example, whenever possible, ask them not to touch the top of the ring. Tell them to use exactly the same material and design as those of the original. For the interim, there are clever, cheap, temporary solutions, such as Ring Snuggies (HK$69.70 for six in various sizes; www.amazon.com).

Are you asking or telling? A bit of both, I guess. Yes, it is called Toteme (www.toteme-nyc.com). You are partially correct about its country of origin, too, as it was launched by New York-based Swedish couple Elin Kling and Karl Lindman. I always wonder with these sorts of questions, though, if you've even considered what the supposedly "must-have" label looks like.

Are you really looking for what they call "luxury leisure wear evoking the 1970s and European holidays"? Or is it just a status thing? The only occasions on which I answer these keeping-up-with-the-Joneses queries are when the clothes warrant attention. And these do. Priced from about HK$780 to HK$3,260, Toteme's recently launched capsule collection lives up to the hype.

It includes luxurious cashmere and micro-modal tees and tanks, silk or fine linen trousers and shorts, and polos made of super-fine pique. Breezy knit dresses, easy blouses, light cashmere pullovers and versatile silk camisoles round out the collection in a neutral palette of white, cream, beige and black, with bright coral as the highlight colour.

Oh, and each item is named after a holiday destination, such as Belize, Toulon, Stockholm, Kensington, Bodrum, Bahia, Montauk and Havana. Ah, and you are right, the line hasn't landed in Hong Kong yet, but you can stock up at net-a-porter.com and theline.com.
