On the shelf

I fell in love with sour cherries - and sour cherry juice - on a trip to Istanbul. I liked the fruit so much that I learned the Turkish word for sour cherry (visne) before I could say hello (merhaba). The Eden brand of organic tart cherry juice is made in Michigan, in the United States.

It's darker, cloudier and less sweet than the juices I tasted in Turkey, which is good, because it's not sweetened, unlike the others. It tastes best when very cold, and you should shake the bottle before serving it. It's HK$70 for a 946ml bottle at city'super in Causeway Bay (tel: 2506 2888).

From the packaging, Taza chocolate Mexicano looks like it should come from Mexico, but it's actually made in the United States. Organic and direct trade, the Mexican-style chocolate is ground with stone mills, so it has a coarser texture than most eating chocolates, so would be better as a drinking chocolate (whisk it into hot milk or water). I tasted two - the puro ("70% dark") and vanilla (50 per cent) and prefer the former, because it's less sweet. It's also sold in orange, coffee and salted almond flavours, and costs HK$38.80 to HK$45 for a 200-gram packet at Great (tel: 2918 9986).
