Behind the label: Caterina Gatta

Who started it? Italian designer Caterina Gatta graduated in 2011 from Sapienza University, in Rome, with a degree in the science of fashion and costume. Three years before, Gatta had already registered her eponymous label and put together a debut collection. Encouraged by a positive response, she launched another range, inspired by vintage fabrics and the patchwork designs of labels such as Versace, Saint Laurent and Pierre Cardin. Today, she uses motifs from her favourite artists and a variety of eccentric, eyecatching prints.

Why we love it: the shape and structure of Gatta’s dresses are deceptively complex, incorporating three layers of silk. Each dress takes Gatta’s tailors four times longer to make than an ordinary garment. The prints are vibrant, erring on the side of mystical, and we love the use of artwork on the signature pieces.

What we’d pick: the swimming koi on the high-necked crop top (HK$8,900) paired with the fab face skirt (HK$9,500; both left), and the quirky star print on the black romper (HK$9,900), and the blouse (HK$8,900) and shorts (HK$6,700; all below).

Where can you get it? Caterina Gatta is available at Harvey Nichols, The Landmark, Central, tel: 3695 3388.
