Behind the label: ATP Atelier

Who started it? Swedish shoe brand ATP Atelier (the “ATP” stands for All Tomorrow’s Parties) was founded in 2010 by friends Jonas Clason and Maj-La Pizzelli, who met in the 1980s while working at fashion brand Gul & Bl. Pizzelli went on to work for various Swedish brands as a designer and consultant while Clason co-founded noted indie label Whyred (he currently works at denim label Acne). Their paths crossed again a few years ago, but it wasn’t until a trip to Otranto, a small medieval town in southern Italy, that they stumbled upon a tiny atelier making handcrafted sandals. This inspired them to launch a label of high-quality, contemporary footwear.

Why we love it: the brand mixes Stockholm’s cool, minimalist style with Italian craftsmanship. Like most Scandinavian brands, the look is effortless and elegant, with pieces you can keep forever. Most styles are simple enough to match most wardrobes although they are updated with new design details each season. Every pair is handmade in Italy using high-quality materials and vegetable dyes, to minimise the environmental impact.

The label has two collections: one featuring ongoing classics and the other devoted to new, seasonal styles. The classics include must-have sandals, from buckled, block-heeled styles to simple T-straps, which come in a timeless palette and materials such as suede and leather. For autumn, new styles include boots with wedges or heels and materials such as printed faux snakeskin and Bordeaux velvet.

What we’d pick: from the classics, the Ingrid (above; HK$1,900) is an ankle-wrap sandal that would look great with a simple dress. For the cooler months, we like the Jane leather boot (left; HK$3,680).

Where can I get it? A selection is available at Vein (Lee Gardens One, 33 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay, tel: 2528 4988) and online at www.atpatelier.com.
