Gianvito Rossi talks about his shoemaker heritage and what inspires him

Shoe designer Gianvito Rossi, son of legendary Italian shoemaker Sergio, launched his own brand in 2007. His feminine yet glamorous designs are worn by celebrities including Reese Witherspoon, Kylie Minogue and Mary-Kate Olsen.

What was it like growing up in a family of renowned shoemakers? “I was very lucky to grow up in a family where I was given a unique chance to live and breathe the art of shoemaking everyday. It’s a world where you never stop learning. When I started, the industry was dominated by shoemakers, then the ready-to-wear brands began taking over the scene. Shoe designers are now major actors in the fashion industry.”

How has your brand’s style evolved? “My codes are related to modernity, elegance and femininity. I think that shoes make an outfit, and that women care about them even more than they do clothes. A great design should make a woman look better. Otherwise it isn’t worth anything.”

What inspires your designs? “Experiences from travel and movies to images and people. Of course, I consider trends but then it so happens that I often want to do something different and just beautiful. The most memorable design I ever created was a boot for a Russian-inspired shoot for Vogue Paris made from voile and metallic leather. It was gorgeous.”

What’s the secret to creating the perfect shoe? “I’m still looking for it!” What legacy do you want for your brand? “A sense of beauty.”
